In Pisgah This November, the Day of the Week Matters More Than the Trail

November 5, 2026

Pisgah National Forest doesn't close in November. The Forest Service's own calendar barely changes it. A few restrooms lock, the Cradle of Forestry goes quiet, and one campground shuts at the end of the month. The calendar that does change the Pisgah Ranger District this month comes from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The forest you hike, ride and walk the dog in is also Pisgah Game Land, and the rules for sharing it change by date and by day of the week.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission maps the Pisgah National Forest Game Land at 522,590 acres across 12 counties, Transylvania included. The Pisgah Ranger District covers 163,168 acres of Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe and Haywood counties, all inside that footprint. NCWRC's game land rules list Pisgah as a "Seven Days per Week Area." No day of the week is closed to hunting. Some days have different limits.

The Dates That Run the Month

These are the Transylvania County dates from NCWRC's 2026–2027 season dates at a glance, in order starting from Thursday, November 5:

  1. Through November 13: deer archery season.
  2. November 14 to 27: deer blackpowder season. Antlerless deer can be taken from November 21 to 27.
  3. November 21: last day of the fall bear season in the Mountain Bear Management Unit, which ran from October 3. The second bear season runs December 12 to January 1.
  4. November 28: deer gun season opens and runs through January 1, 2027. In Transylvania County, opening day is the only antlerless day of gun season.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26. The Friday after is the last day of blackpowder season, and Saturday is the gun opener. If you're planning a long walk to burn off the holiday meal, those two days are the busiest hunting days of the month.

Across the county line, Henderson and Buncombe counties open gun season the same Saturday. Their gun-season antlerless window runs longer, from November 28 through December 5. In parts of both counties east of N.C. 191, NCWRC allows antlerless deer on every day of the antlered season. If you head toward North Mills River, the date is the same and the details are a little different.

Sunday Morning Is the Firearm-Free Window

NCWRC's general hunting regulations keep one firearm-free block in the week. On Sundays, hunting with firearms is prohibited from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. except on controlled hunting preserves. The same rules ban migratory bird hunting all day Sunday, prohibit Sunday firearm hunting within 500 yards of a place of worship and ban the use of firearms on deer chased by dogs on Sundays. The other hours of the week follow the usual shooting window, which starts 30 minutes before sunrise and ends 30 minutes after sunset.

Day Firearm hunting on Pisgah Game Land Archery
Monday to Saturday Allowed during legal shooting hours in an open season Allowed
Sunday, before 9:30 a.m. Allowed, except migratory birds Allowed, except migratory birds
Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Prohibited Allowed, except migratory birds
Sunday, after 12:30 p.m. Allowed, except migratory birds Allowed, except migratory birds

The midday Sunday break covers firearms only. The regulations say archery equipment "may be used to hunt on Sundays without the restrictions applied to hunting with firearms." A Sunday-morning loop through Pink Beds is still a walk on active game land. What drops away for those three hours is rifle and blackpowder hunting, and that matters most from November 14 on. November has five Sundays: the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. The 29th is the first Sunday of gun season.

Where the 150-Yard Line Falls

The general game lands regulations, last updated July 13, 2026, make it unlawful to fire any weapon from a vehicle, within 150 yards of a residence on or next to game lands, or within 150 yards of any game-lands building or camping area unless posted otherwise. Archery is exempt from the 150-yard rule.

Trails are not on that list. Posted "Safety Zones" ban hunting and weapon discharge inside their boundaries, but they exist only where they are signed. So the buffer is around buildings, camping areas and homes along the forest edge, not around the trail.

That makes orange a practical choice. NCWRC requires hunter orange for hunters during deer firearms seasons. For everyone else, the clearest current guidance nearby is at DuPont State Recreational Forest. The NC Forest Service encourages all visitors there to wear blaze orange during hunting seasons and maps safety zones around its high-use waterfall corridors. DuPont is its own permit-only game land, with public hunting scheduled Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and its general hours stay 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

You'll also find older maps that label part of the district the Pisgah Bear Sanctuary. Current NCWRC materials call it the Pisgah Bear Management Area, roughly 61,670 acres in Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson and Transylvania counties, split into hunt zones 1 and 2. Under NCWRC's regulations for specific game lands, bear hunting there is permit-only. It is managed hunting ground, not a hunting-free one.

Bracken Preserve, the Hunting-Free Woods Next Door

Some woods near Pisgah Forest run on a different rulebook. Brevard's city code establishes Bracken Preserve as a City of Brevard public park. Section 77-6 says no one may hunt or fish there or fire a firearm or bow inside its boundaries.

The same section shows where the preserve sits. A licensed hunter may carry a firearm or bow through Bracken "for the purpose of accessing game lands within Pisgah National Forest," but the gun has to be unloaded and the arrows kept in a quiver. Hunters may carry legally harvested game out through the preserve but may not field dress it there. The code also lets anyone legally carrying a concealed handgun under state law carry it in the preserve. Bracken shares a boundary with the game land, and the hunting rules change at that line.

Bracken's rules also require pets on a leash and keep visitors off any trail posted closed. Between November 28 and January 1, it's the closest woods to Pisgah Forest where city code bans hunting outright.

The Rest of the Forest Thins Out at the Same Time

The Forest Service's seasonal closures page, updated October 15, lists closures that land in the same weeks as the hunting dates. It notes that closure dates can shift with the weather.

  • Cradle of Forestry: closed from mid-November to early April and reopens the first Saturday in April.
  • Pink Beds: restrooms close for the season and shelter reservations are unavailable. The Forest Service's Helene recovery page says the Pink Beds Loop still runs its full five miles. Barnett Branch Trail is closed where it meets the loop.
  • Sycamore Flats: shelter restrooms stay open. The restrooms at the far end of the loop close.
  • Coontree: restrooms close for the season.
  • Sliding Rock: open but unstaffed from Labor Day weekend to Memorial Day weekend.
  • Sunburst Campground: closes at the end of November until mid-March.
  • Mount Pisgah Campground: closed for winter as of October 26, through May 21, according to the National Park Service.

The Parkway was open from the Pisgah Store to US 276 and on past Graveyard Fields to Beech Gap, mileposts 408.8 to 423.2, as of 6:38 a.m. on October 28, according to the NPS road status page. The page warns that status can change. Helene damage still shapes the district's back roads. Yellow Gap Road, FS 1206, is open from US 276 to Wolf Ford Horse Camp and closed from there to North Mills River Campground. Courthouse Creek Road, FS 140, and Pilot Mountain Road, FS 229, remain closed for storm damage. FS 225B has been closed to all traffic, hikers, bikers and horses included, for fish-passage work since a May 2026 alert that gives no end date.

Two landmarks on US 276 are still in flux. In August, WLOS reported that the Forest Service was aiming to reopen Davidson River Campground on October 1, weather permitting, after the date had already slipped twice. Check reservations before you count on it. NCWRC says the whole Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery must close during construction in 2026 and 2027. WLOS reported in June that the former Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education building won't be rebuilt.

By the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Cradle is closed, Sunburst is closing, and fewer of the staffed stops along US 276 are open. Apart from storm closures like Barnett Branch, the trails stay open, and from that Saturday on they're shared with gun season.

Reading Thanksgiving Weekend Day by Day

Here's how the holiday weekend lines up with the published dates. Thursday the 26th falls inside blackpowder season, with antlerless deer allowed. Friday the 27th is the last day of blackpowder season. Saturday the 28th opens gun season and is Transylvania's only antlerless day of it. Sunday the 29th gives you the 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. firearm-free window. Bracken Preserve stays hunting-free every day of that stretch, and the regulations call for orange on gun hunters on every day of it.

This is general information drawn from published state and city rules, not legal advice. NCWRC's digest and the city code are the final word, so check them for your own situation.

If your property backs up to the forest and you've wondered how the game-land boundary and that 150-yard residence rule sit against your property line, H. Scott & Associates is happy to pull up the boundary maps with you. While we're at it, we can talk about what your home is worth.
